Abstract

The real-world example IAUTO Automotive GmbH is a German-based supplier providing services needed for the development and validation of AI-driven mobility solutions in the field of autonomous driving. IAUTO’s unique selling proposition is their lead time advancement in the development of software applications and algorithms, which enable the user to validate and annotate data. IAUTO is already doing business in China and is about to enter strategic partnerships with Chinese companies. Chinese regulations require IAUTO to engage in these partnerships to be able to offer the same range of services as in Germany. This bears a high risk of leakage of their valuable IP. At the time of writing this case study, their intellectual property (IP) is only protected in Germany and Europe, but not in China. Chinas specific IP regulations allow each person who first files IP in China the right to use it, independent from its original inventor. This is why the protagonist, Mr Joop Landmann, has to act immediately.
